I like Amanda Hocking. Some of her books are really, really good. This is not one of them.

First, can anyone like a sullen young adult who still thinks she's a teenager? What's with the 22 year old angst? GET over yourself. Your parents love you. They love each other. What is there to complain about?

And really, can't you just ask the guy you like if he likes you too? Why all the games? Just find out.

Am I too old for YA? SURELY NOT.

Hocking still does the horrifying: I want to go with.

No, you want to go with ME.

Despite how boring the first 3/4 of this was, I loved the cliffhanger. It was the only redeeming thing in this book...and actually has me questioning whether I should get the next book, or if I should forever forget the characters. (And I loved the Trylle characters in the previous series.)

Frostfire The Kanin Chronicles From the World of the Trylle Amanda Hocking Books Reviews

I am sorely disappointed with this book, especially after having a great reading streak with books by Sarah J. Maas and Grace Draven, and it isn't because this is a YA series because I LOVE YA books. Normally. The only reason I finished reading Frostfire is because I bought it instead of reading a sample or going to the library, and I didn't want to waste the money spent (although since I didn't enjoy it I guess it was wasted anyway).

*POSSIBLE SPOILERS*

This book failed on many fronts, and here are some of the reasons why

1. The characters are simple and underdeveloped. You get the sense that the things they say and their actions are done purely to create some conflict that attempts to move the story along because there is no explainable motivation otherwise. Hocking describes them as having primary personality traits, yet they all speak the same and behave in a similar manner. Occasionally Hocking will explain how a specific situation has affected a character in a way that has them not behaving as they normally would, but those explanations feel more like a cop-out for lazy writing.

2. The relationship dynamics are static. The main character, Bryn, already knows everyone and there is no change to her relationships throughout the book. Even when those relationships offer the possibility of change, they are "repaired" and the dynamic remains the same. Bryn and Ridley, the supposed "love interest", kiss at some point and not long after they both admit that it was a mistake and neither of them are interested; there is a car ride of awkwardness and then everything is back to the way it was. In another example a fellow tracker, and friend of Bryn, reveals she is pregnant and can't go on anymore risky missions and Bryn erupts in nonsensical anger toward her (basically insinuates that she is betraying her dedication to being a tracker and is all-around horrible); then she apologizes the next day and suddenly everything is fine again. This drama doesn't even add anything to the vague plot or Bryn's growth as a character; was Hocking just trying to fill in extra pages? You might think so.

3. Building off the previous point, none of the characters stick to their criticisms of others opinions when confronted. The first character addresses the second character, then the second character gets defensive and explains themselves (along the lines of "you know that's not what I meant!"), and then the first character reels it back in with a "I know, you're right". I was already sick of hearing "I know, you're right" half way through the book. This severely limits the character growth that is a NECESSITY in story writing.

4. Romance? What romance? Bryn thinking about kissing Ridley, Ridley staring at her a couple times, and one kiss that apparently neither of them wanted. Outside of that there is nothing, it doesn't even feel "forbidden" in the slightest. No tension. No descriptions of Ridley by Bryn that portrays him in an attractive or loving manner. NOTHING.

Trust me, I have a lot more I disliked that I could list for you. It didn't take long for me to want to be a character in the book just so that I could slap each and every one of them. I will definitely not be finishing this series. I gave this book two stars instead of one for the description element; I like the abilities of the different troll societies and setting was portrayed fairly well. I heard the Trylle trilogy is better, but it may be a while, if ever, before I'm interested enough to check it out from the library.
Trolls. This was a new one for me. Second to the beautiful snowy cover and the image of a strong female warrior, a story about trolls was the main reason for my interest in reading this book. I've mentioned before that a major driving factor for all of the books I enjoy reading is that there has to be some aspect of a love story. The whole story doesn't have to be romance (even though I'm a major fan of those books) but it definitely needs to have some sort of love interest taking semi-center stage. The synopsis above mentions forbidden romance but to my disappointment, this story doesn't really have much focus on a love story or love interest. 60% of the way through the book there's a hint at the forbidden romance but it seems to be a more unrequited love. 75% of the way through and I was about ready to give up...but who gives up on a book 3/4 of the way through? No, if I stick it out that long I'll read it all.

A slight dislike for me was the similarities to aspects of the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead. Specifically the Hogdragen, which are the royal guard who are set with the task of protecting the royalty, being similar in roles to the Dhampirs from Vampire Academy. Both are protectors of their race's royalty from danger. In one scene at a party the Hogdragen are mentioned standing around the perimeter of the room keeping watch...and change the name of the characters, is a replica of a scene in VA. That could be total coincidence but for me, the similarities between the two series was the first thing to come into my mind and it irked me.

There's definitely a mystery going on involving Konstantin, who was once the best of the Hogdragen, not to mention a major crush that Bryn had, but unfortunately tried to murder her Dad. 65% of the way through you just begin to get glimpses into the fact that perhaps maybe all isn't as it seems among the Kanin troll tribe.

I felt this story had too much of a slow build and too many down moments with not enough action taking place to keep me real invested in the story. I'm not ready to give up on it yet as I have book 2 to read too and am hopeful the pace will pick up....but I will say with 100% certainty that if the pace is as slow in Ice Kissed as it was in Frostfire it'll end up a DNF for me.

If you're a regular reader of mine you'll know that I'm a cover snob. And this cover is amazing. It drew me in first with the synopsis second. But in order for me to love a book the inside of it is what counts. This for me wasn't a strong enough story or plot. Here's hoping for more in Ice Kissed!
