Did I ever say I love this series? I love the characters, the relationships, the strategic drama between all of the combatants, and of course the development of the main character, Ky. This episode deals with the struggle starting from just an idea to the beginning of a foundation to deal with the enemy. Or as Winston Churchill said it's the end of the beginning - enjoy.Tags : Engaging the Enemy (Vatta's War) [Elizabeth Moon] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. “Marvelously compelling . . . consummate military-adventure science fiction.”—SciFi In the aftermath of the cold-blooded assassinations that killed her parents and shattered the Vatta interstellar shipping empire,Elizabeth Moon,Engaging the Enemy (Vatta's War),Del Rey,0345447573,Science Fiction - General,Life on other planets,Science fiction,Science fiction.,Space warfare,War stories,AMERICAN SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY,Adventure,FICTION Science Fiction Action & Adventure,FICTION Science Fiction General,FICTION Science Fiction Military,FICTION Science Fiction Space Opera,Fiction,Fiction-Science Fiction,FictionScience Fiction - Space Opera,General Adult,MASS MARKET,MOON, ELIZABETH - PROSE & CRITICISM,Monograph Series, any,Science Fiction - Action & Adventure,Science Fiction - Space Opera,United States,Young Adult Fiction, adventure;elizabeth moon;female protagonist;mercenaries;military;pirates;science fiction;sf;space;space opera;speculative fiction;vatta's war;war;science fiction books;sci fi;sci-fi;sci fi books;science fiction and fantasy;fantasy science fiction;sci-fi fantasy;sf fantasy;sff;science fiction fantasy;fantasy and science fiction;science fiction adventure;sci-fi books;literary science fiction;science fantasy;classic science fiction;fantasy sci-fi;for fans of sci-fi;science fiction thriller;sf book, military; space; science fiction; science fiction books; sci fi; sci fi books; sci-fi; space opera; adventure; war; sci-fi fantasy; sff; science fiction fantasy; elizabeth moon; female protagonist; mercenaries; pirates; sf; speculative fiction; vatta's war; science fiction and fantasy; fantasy science fiction; sf fantasy; fantasy and science fiction; science fiction adventure; sci-fi books; literary science fiction; science fantasy; classic science fiction; fantasy sci-fi; for fans of sci-fi; science fiction thriller; sf book,FICTION Science Fiction Action & Adventure,FICTION Science Fiction General,FICTION Science Fiction Military,FICTION Science Fiction Space Opera,FictionScience Fiction - Space Opera,Science Fiction - Action & Adventure,Science Fiction - Space Opera,Young Adult Fiction,American Science Fiction And Fantasy,Fiction,Adventure
Engaging the Enemy Vatta War Elizabeth Moon 9780345447579 Books Reviews
I love every book she has written! Strong, capable female characters!
Much has been made of this book being the first difficult read in the Vatta's War series. It is. The middle portion of the novel turns into something of a job. (In her charming acknowledgments, Moon self-deprecatingly thanked friends and family for curbing her tendencies to go into too much detail; unfortunately, one wishes she had curbed those tendencies even more.)
Happily, the last hundred pages turn things around significantly, thanks to the entertainment derived from one antagonist's intriguing accusations (and his fate) followed swiftly by an excellent space battle. So, if you're slogging through the middle of "Engaging the Enemy," have heart that the "job" becomes pleasure at the end--and reviews have been kinder to book four.
Good story
After many inhibiting difficulties, Ky's ideas begin to bear fruit, albeit not without a few problems. Good reading and good development.
Great series, although as the books move along they become more predictable. Vatta is basically a re-do of her Serrano series. Both are great reads, with heroines that are almost clones of each other.
Ky Vatta continues her quest to rebuild her family's shipping empire, protect her surviving relatives, find the source of the attacks that devastated it. Meanwhile on her home planet of Slotter Key, deep secrets are coming to light...
The previous books have left the Vatta family of the planet Slotter Key in disarray - the home base destroyed, many of the family dead, the rest scattered and under threat, and the family's interstellar trading business largely out of operation.
Engaging the Enemy weaves together three main threads in the family's attempts to rescue itself, each centering on a different surviving Vatta
1) to secure a new home base on Slotter Key (Grace);
2) to manage finances and revive interstellar trading operations (Stella); and
3) to identify, locate, and neutralize the family's previously unknown enemies (Kylara).
In the course of the book the nature of those enemies gradually becomes clearer, and we come to understand that the entire local interstellar order is under threat. With considerable difficulties, each of the three principle characters makes significant progress in her area, leaving us with a pretty clear picture of how they are organized and prepared to continue the struggle in future books.
I've seen some fairly negative comments about this book, but I think some of these may be missing the point. For instance I felt frustrated by the slow progress in organizing a fleet of armed ships to deal with the problem, as Ky bounces from station to station. But these difficulties emerge quite naturally from the interstellar culture Moon has been describing for us, and quicker and easier progress here would have seemed glib and silly; uncertainty and frustration are the core of Ky Vatta's own experience during this period. That is a notable accomplishment of the writer's art to make the reader feel the same emotions as the characters! Of course what we all want is to see our missiles blowing up whoever killed so much of the family, and to feel the satisfaction of revenge taken; but what we get, in this book, is a lot more sophisticated and realistic.
Additional main strengths of this work include interesting and complicated relationships (especially between Ky and Stella), portrayal of Ky as capable of making mistakes and learning from them, some highly creative and entertaining details of the various local cultures they encounter, and the highly readable narrative we expect from a writer as skilled and experienced as Elizabeth Moon.
Weaknesses do include the limited progress made on some fronts (we could have used a longer book where more got done!) and certain just-so elements of technology and culture that the plot relies on at various points.
On balance, Moon gives us a very worthwhile read, a book that is much better than the weight of criticism would seem to suggest.
Did I ever say I love this series? I love the characters, the relationships, the strategic drama between all of the combatants, and of course the development of the main character, Ky. This episode deals with the struggle starting from just an idea to the beginning of a foundation to deal with the enemy. Or as Winston Churchill said it's the end of the beginning - enjoy.
