In Uncommon Sense - A View from the middle, the author argues that the ideology-driven political divide gripping the country, the dramatically increased influence of the corporate world on Congress, the startling concentration of wealth in the hands of a small percentage of our citizens and the concurrent shrinkage of the middle class are threatening natinoal stability. He then offers specific common sense, pragmatic suggestions for resolving these and other related issues facing the country.

I am upset with Washington, politicians and what’s happening in this country because of many things, including almost all of the issues discussed in this little book. It follows a middle path so that regardless of a reader’s political leanings at least some, probably most of the chapters will hit home. I like the annotated table of contents that made it easy to zero in on my pet peeves. Money in elections, scope of government, taxes, energy, credit card indenture, the war on drugs, education, and the list of topics goes on, nothing is sacred. How did it get to be this way? What can be done about it? Former journalist, PR man, sailor Roberts tells us in casual language. He weaves together history, clear explanations, statistics, opinions and his own personal experiences — which I particularly liked — to define the problems, apply common sense and come to conclusions. Yes, he proposes corrective actions, some original, some familiar, some that should be easy, some that certainly would not be, some I approve, some I would change or just reject. It’s all tasty food for thought, discussion, transformation, action. I would have like to see more on what has been tried and found promising, but that can be found. Roberts doesn’t claim to be a researcher, though he obviously did plenty for this book.Product details

Uncommon Sense A View From The Middle John Roberts 9780990796404 Books Reviews
I appreciate that the author states in the introduction that if you don't agree with what he suggests - come up with a better solution. As a public school teacher, I was most interested in chapter 15. I appreciate that he recognizes that teachers can NOT make up for the lack of parent support for education - but he offers a logical solution that over time, may just work. He also addresses the use of property taxes for funding public schools...it's not fair. It gives the already advantaged kids an advantage, and leaves the kids from disadvantaged families behind. There is so much more to this book - it is a great book to lead into discussions of possible solutions of the problems in our country in a non partisan manner.
Good read
John Roberts has done an excellent job in framing many of the issues now facing America. He has done it a non-partisan manner so anyone can read it & be better informed about the critical decisions that we as Americans must make to maintain this amazing country that we have. It would be great if our elected officials would read this book & perhaps start thinking about how they could help address these problems & allow America to move forward. We cannot continue with the gridlock that we have seen for the last decade. As John shows us the divide between rich & poor is widening which is not what America is about. The greatness of America is that we had a healthy middle class. .During the 50's ,60's & 70's , the middle class was healthy & so was the entire country. America does well when the middle class does well. If we continue on the trend of economic non -equality we will become like a third world nation. Thanks John for taking the time to write this very valuable book- a must read if you are interested in saving America for your children.
