I really wanted to like this book. The blurb was interesting and even the first 50 pages had me thinking, but it just didn't deliver in the end. I'm not traditionally a huge romance reader, but I was interested in this one because of the supernatural aspect which was just okay for me. The author didn't create a new world, if you will, where I tried to think ahead about the "what ifs" and I believed it was really possible. It had potential hence my early interest, but it just got forced and not thoroughly written. The seemingly random sex, most often at incredibly inappropriate times, was too much for me. It just didn't fit the story. Also, the editing is terrible. I stopped counting how many times "father" was "rather" and quotes were missing for dialogue. My advice is take this one as what it is - brain candy.

Eternity Immortal Witches Maggie Shayne 9780515124071 Books Reviews

I am not a fan of First Personwriting. I used to read Shayne many years ago and enjoyed her books. Don't remember if she always wrote in First Person or not. I just know that this story bummed me out. I was actually feeling depressed reading this story. In consequence, I don't expect to read any of "The Immortals" Series. Generally am not a fan of witchcraft stories. This book was free for Prime Members. I would have been sorely disappointed if cash was paid for this story. Thank you for saving me the money I would have spent on the series. Generally, I would purchase the whole series in one order opposed to one at a time.
I liked the idea of the struggle between the good and evil immortals, however it didn't really seem to have a purpose to it. I mean okay great she becomes immortal saving a life out of love but to what end? Sure they adopt the credo of do no harm, but what do they do? Aside for pining for her lost love for 300 years I didn't really see a point of her immortality. There was also one glaring editing issue that I was shocked to see. There was a moment when Nathaniel commented about how he almost lost to Raven. For the life of me I couldn't recall that fight but figured it must have happened off page or when Raven was commenting on their many fights. Oh no, it happened in chapter 3, which in my kindle edition came after chapter 11. Huh? This is on top of quite a few typos throughout. So while I liked the characters and idea behind the story, in good conscience I couldn't give it a higher rating.
The book started out on a high note, with Raven's life as a witch 300 years ago. At that point she seemed to be a strong character, quite grounded in her intentions and strong-willed. All that seemed to fly out the window once she got physically involved with Duncan. Then everything seemed to revolve around him, being with him, loving him, saving him, grieving for him. Then when the story jumped 300 years to present day, Raven just became flat, one-dimensional, and almost whiny at times as she watched and waited for her Duncan. When he does come into the picture again, the whole relationship is too unbelievable. He doesn't remember her at all but still feels an intense attraction that almost makes him make love to her the minute they meet on the street in Sanctuary.
On a purely editorial level, there were numerous typos throughout the entire book. There were so many times where the open quotation marks were omitted, along with some general spelling errors and missed words.
Overall, it wasn't the worst read, but I doubt that I will read the rest of the series.
The first half (approximately) of the book was really enjoyable. I liked the writing, the characters, and the storyline. The point where it lost my interest was when they lived with the Indians. From there it grew increasingly boring, annoying, and I'm sorry to say stupid, but I kept reading because I really wanted to see the modern-day Raven and Duncan get together. It seemed like Raven had lost all her strength, charm, and sense through the 300 years that passed without Duncan. At the 2/3 point I gave up on it and went on to the next book in my TBR pile (Dirty Little Secret by Sophia Ryan) that had nothing to do with witches but at least held my interest. I will go back to finish Eternity, eventually, but it'll only be the last few pages and only so I can get some closure on this book. One other thing that diminished my enjoyment of this book was the formatting and editing job. Many open quotes were missing, and there were numerous typos and problems with comma usages. Also, I hate it when the author has the characters say each other's names often, like in every sentence. A good editor should have caught that and advised that most of them be deleted. In addition, a chapter labeled 'chapter three' was out of place -- at about the halfway point -- showing that more time and care should have been devoted to preparing this book for a reading audience. I had high hopes for this book because I love the topic, but in the end, I was let down. If the second half had matched the quality of the first, I would have given it four stars instead of the two.
