Whispers Dean Koontz Books
3/5 stars. I read this book for the second time this month. I remembered that the first read, when the book first came out years ago, was one I liked very much. However, this second read, as an older and maturer person had me questioning how I had like this book so much years ago. The plot line is very exciting, the two main protagonists were done well, and I liked them. However, the dialogue and the sex scenes left me almost screaming to myself of why Koontz was writing such rediculous dialogue and too indepth sex that was described like a cheap novel one would buy in an adult book store. These two things truly weakened the novel , regardless of how novel and exciting the plot was.Tags : Amazon.com: Whispers (9780425209929): Dean Koontz: Books,Dean Koontz,Whispers,Berkley,042520992X,9780425209929,Mystery & Detective - General,Psychological,Thrillers - General,Adult child abuse victims,Horror fiction,Serial murderers,Stalkers,Suspense fiction,Women - Crimes against,AMERICAN MYSTERY & SUSPENSE FICTION,FICTION Horror,FICTION Mystery & Detective General,FICTION Psychological,FICTION Thrillers Crime,FICTION Thrillers General,FICTION Thrillers Suspense,Fiction,Fiction - Horror,Fiction-Thriller,GENERAL,General Adult,Horror & ghost stories,Horror - General,United States
Whispers Dean Koontz Books Reviews
I've been a Koontz fan since I was a teenager, and this has been one of my standing favorites without fail. It's not as good as some of Koontz's later books (Midnight and Intensity are my absolute favorites), but it's still extremely entertaining, twisted, dark, weird, and suspenseful. As many others have pointed out, there is a LOT of gratuitous and unnecessary descriptions and dialogue, and the characters are very one-dimensional (the villain seems to be the only multi-faceted personality in the whole story). There's way too much talking overall. Basically, if you see a big paragraph, chances are you can skip right over it and you won't lose any of the story. Still, it's gritty, wicked fun to read.
Well what can I say about this book that will do it justice? For starters it has one of the best villians I've ever read about. Not only is he truly insane and sadistic but by the end you realize he is also a victim. You actually feel sorry for him.
The other characters are very good also. All of them. Now that is rare, not to find one character in a book you do not like.
Next is the story. It is simply just flat out a great story. Well told and well written. Add the top notch group of characters and you get one hell of a book.
This is my third Koontz book and it is by far the best so far. Not that the others were bad, Shattered and Watchers, on the contrary they were very good also but not on par with this great novel. Quite simply this is a must read, PERIOD!
The first third of the book progressed slowly and took me a few months to get through. Once it finally got moving it kept a faster pace. The plot was very predictable and I realized how everything was going to unfold about the same time the pace got faster. Even with its predictably it still held my interest until the end. There was too much sex for my taste but that's just me. I don't mind romance in thrillers but this was too explicit for me and if that was what I wanted I'd stick to cheesy romance novels. I would still recommend this but if you are an avid thriller reader you maybe disappointed with this one.
I have read almost every one of Dean's books to my wife over the last two decades... after experiencing so many of his writing styles it was fun to go back to the beginning of his career and see how it all began... no surprise that Whispers grabbed me by the rotund ones and dragged us through never ending nights well passed our bedtime... explosive character development coupled with a genuine honesty about everything that truly matters in life is an over arching theme in every one of his books that demands an area found within every library on the planet labeled " MUST READ"... Koontz books would be on the top shelf
I did NOT think I was going to like this book! In fact, after I started it I threw it aside, and wasn't going to read it at all. I thought it was going to be a scarey, stalker type story (which I HATE). I finally picked it up about 7 months later when I got really desperate!!! (No Koontz books left to read, and couldn't order any more for over a week!!!) It started getting really good only about 3 pages where I had left off! Needless to say, it was NOT your normal stalker story!!! It picked up with a more supernatural/sci-fi theme and took off from there! The plot in this one was right up there with the best! This was really great and typical Koontz after all! It did take a couple chapters to start getting good, which is NOT typical Koontz! Usually he grips you in the first couple pages! All through this book I kept saying "What's going on here? What is he DOING???" He was weaving a really unusual, strange, gripping storyline. This one is wonderfully imaginative and exciting. This IS typical Koontz (which as his fans know is exceptional)!!!!
I saw the television movie of the book and felt that there had to be more to the story.
There was far more to the story than in the movie. It has good character development of the main figures in the story. I liked the amount of detail to support the premise of the story and develop the action. The story flowed well.
I liked that Hilary was a fairly strong character. She knows what she wants and how to take care of herself but it is also her weakness.
There were some minor flaws but they do not detract from the action. The old mansion was built on a site that was almost inaccessible so how did they get workmen and materials up to such a remote site. Despite Katherine's complicated story, in a small town, there would always be one or two busybodies who would have suspicions and there would have to have been some gossip. I'm also not so sure an experienced detective would have let himself and two civilians walk into a potentially dangerous situation or access a house where there was possible evidence in an active crime investigation, even to air it out.
Still these did not detract from the overall suspense of the story. It was a work of suspense, not a study on police techniques or true crime.
It was entertaining and it filled in a lot of details left out of the movie that tied the story together.
