FAITHLESS By Karin Slaughter [No. 5 In The Grant County BooksMY REVIEW 4-STARS****
I finished reading this fifth installment of the GRANT COUNTY SERIES early in the August heat of 2018, almost a decade and a half following this novel's publication. It is fascinating to note that by this relatively early period in Slaughter's career, she was already being lauded by the literary critics as one of the best crime novelists in America. She had established herself at near the pinnacle of a very select number of writers whose wheelhouse was forensic science and chilling psychological suspense.
I enjoyed this novel for another historical reason in that having chronicled the two series (GRANT COUNTY and WILL TRENT) I noted that Slaughter's sixth novel was the incredible TRIPTYCH in 2006 (one of my personal favorites). There was a pivot back to the final installment of the GRANT COUNTY SERIES in 2007 [BEYOND REACH], and then 2008 marked the continued saga of WILL TRENT. In the decade that followed Karin Slaughter would make readers all over the entire globe members of her growing fan base.
It is obvious by now that I am a loyal fan of this author's works. "No one does it better..." from the complex cast of characters who inhabit the fictional small town of Heartsdale in Grant County to the self-effacing GBI Agent Will Trent and the people who populate his universe in downtown Atlanta, GA.
FAITHLESS is set in the small community of Heartsdale and it tells the continuing saga of the dark side of small town life. A contentious altercation between Sara and Jeffrey during a walk in the woods culminates with Jeffrey literally stumbling upon the body of a young girl who had been buried alive. This shocking and horrific discovery leads the pair of lovers down a path of criminal investigation that uncovers unspeakable evil in some shockingly unlikely places.
The trail rather quickly leads to a congregation called CHURCH FOR THE GREATER GOOD, and its associated Holy Grown soybean farming collective (populated largely by former felons who are given asylum and a road map to find redemption). There is no shortage of "persons of interest" in this cluttered collection of devout disciples, ostensibly reformed convicts, and revered ministers. These range from all of the family members of the small knit farming community, the figureheads who lead and advise the delegation, to the fanatical figure of a reborn ex-con leading to co-operative's operations.
Faith, religion, sin and forgiveness are threads that the author weaves seamlessly into a surprisingly compelling narrative. We find Jeffrey, the Chief of Police, and his motley crew, relentlessly following all available leads and exploring every possible avenue to unravel the truth.
Fans of the series will recall that religion played prominently in young Lena's own personal brush with an unimaginably malignant serial predator. The events unfolding are taking place three years after Sibyl's murder and Lena's own abduction, rape, and torture in the debut novel BLINDSIGHTED. Lena is back wearing her Detective's Shield and her service weapon. It is obvious that she carries her own bitterness, distrust, and hatred of the religious suspects throughout the investigation which causes dissention between her and Jeffrey. Moreover,
FAITHLESS chronicles the long term effects on the young woman's psyche. We bear witness to Lena's deterioration and ultimate transformation into a victim.
It is through the controversial often misunderstood Lena, and a fateful meeting with a woman from the church, that the issues of abortion and domestic abuse are provided a forum. The book provides honest, insightful glimpses into these issues, and the relationship that is forged between Lena and another female victim provides emotional insight, if not a vicarious walk in another women's shoes. The tortured, trapped existence is an enigma to some people, but knowledge about this topic is an eye-opening glimpse into the hopelessness and despair that is a pervasive malignancy that can only maim and kill its victims.
FAITHLESS is a dark, chilling thriller that seems so much like reality that it could be. I enjoyed the novel very much, if I did have some difficulty with the magnitude of the list of suspects and attempting to unravel the mystery.
It is a must-read "chapter" leading up to the finale of the GRANT COUNTY series. Slaughter skillfully sets the stage, and Lena opens the door at the conclusion of this enthralling lead up to the final chapter.

Faithless A Novel Grant County Karin Slaughter 9780440242918 Books Reviews
Dr. Sara Linton and Police Chief Jeffrey Tolliver take center stage once again in Faithless, the fifth in Karin Slaughter’s excellent Grant County series of bestselling thrillers. They had been married, but Sara ended things when she discovered Jeffrey sleeping with another woman. Now he’s maneuvering to move in with her again — and be remarried. Unsurprisingly, Sara’s resolve is weakening. Meanwhile, Jeffrey’s go-to detective, Lena Adams, is still recovering from a brutal rape and the murder of her twin sister. She is also dating a violent ex-con.
This is the troubling background to the gruesome reality unfolding in Grant County. A young woman has been discovered dead in a grave in the woods. She was buried alive, left in a coffin with water, food, and a vertical pipe that allows air to enter. As Jeffrey, Sara, and Lena investigate the peculiar crime, suspicion quickly centers on a religious cult that operates a nearby factory farm. They learn that the cult is highly respected in Atlanta because it serves as a refuge for the homeless, drug addicts, and ex-cons. In exchange for working on the farm and staying off drugs, the residents receive nourishing food and a safe place to sleep. It’s difficult for the investigators to determine what’s wrong, though it’s clear that something is fishy. No one in the cult is attempting to proselytize, and their beliefs are difficult to understand. There’s definitely something wrong about the family who owns and runs the place and presides over this peculiar religious cult.
As with all of Karin Slaughter’s novels in this series, violence is a constant presence. It requires a strong stomach to read these books. If you’ve got one, you may find the series to be highly rewarding. Slaughter’s characters are complex, her plots ingenious, and her command of suspense unexcelled.
FAITHLESS is 5th in the Grant County forensic series by author Karin Slaughter. This story stars Dr. Sara Linton, the local pediatrician and medical examiner; her ex-husband and Chief of Police, Jeffery Tolliver; and Lena Adams, Tolliver’s homicide detective. None of the three professionals are immune from their own psychological hang-ups and emotional outbursts. Jeffery and Sara were out for a short hike one evening when Jeffery stumbles over what appears to be an air vent in the ground emitting a foul odor. Digging frantically with their hands they find a young woman’s body in a box. She appears to have died from lack of air. However, Dr. Linton’s autopsy indicates that there are additional causes associated with her death. Detective Adams’ own investigation leads her to a nearby farm where derelicts and the downtrodden are provided food and lodging in exchange for laboring on a farm. A mandatory heavy dose of religion bordering on a cult is provided by the Church of the Greater Good operators of the farm. The murder investigation soon centers on the questionable hierarchy of the cult-style church. In the midst of the investigation, Lena finds her own demons from past domestic abuse by a previous boyfriend returning as she tries to help a former cult member leave her abusive husband. Jeffery and Sara spar with their emotional ups and downs in attempting to piece together their puzzled former marriage. Slaughter is able to thread together the emotions of all of her prime characters in a sympathetic way as well as keeping the reader focused on the outcome of the murder investigations. I give the book a 3 1/2-star rating. Slaughter has done better.
